The Cradle of Humankind

The amazing story of human origins is encapsulated in the fossil record of the Cradle of Humankind - a story of adventure, survival and the relentless drive of the human spirit. It is therefore no wonder that the Cradle of Humankind was declared a World Heritage site in December, 1999.

The world famous Sterkfontein Caves are open to the public and boast a hominid exhibition, a fossil preparation laboratory, a cave tour and walkways, a small restaurant and conference center and a retail outlet.

Fit four million years into your trip; Maropeng - "the place where we once lived" - a sprawling 100 hectares development just 7km from the world-famous Sterkfontein caves was officially opened on 7th December 2005 and comprises 2500 square meters of exhibition space exploring the past, present and possible future of humankind, viewing decks; a 5000 seater outdoor amphitheatre; a craft market and numerous gift shops; choices of restaurants and banqueting facilities; a conference center for 500 people and a boutique hotel.

Scenic routes through the ecologically pristine 47 000 hectare site connect activities such as hiking, ballooning, fishing and horse trails, a variety of restaurants and coffee shops to suit all budget, and arts and crafts outlets. Discover the home of our ancestors, The Cradle of Humankind, where you can do a whole lot of living where life began.

Villa Savanna is ideally situated for travellers seeking tranquility and easy access to the exiting activities of the Cradle of Humankind.
