Gauteng and Johannesburg Maps : Gauteng
is the economic powerhouse of the Southern African region. From the vibrant metropolis of
Soweto, through dynamic Johannesburg to the tree-lined diplomacy of Pretoria, Gauteng is a
cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people from all walks of life, from all four corners of
the world.
Gauteng covers over 17 000 km² - approximately 1.4% of the total land surface of South Africa. It is
the smallest of South Africa's nine provinces, and yet Gauteng is home to approximately 8
million people. In the seSotho languages 'Gauteng' means 'Place of Gold', which is
appropriate as the Gauteng province has its economic and historic roots in the thriving
gold industry that was sparked off by the discovery of gold in Johannesburg in 1886.
