DESCRIPTION:

Edward House, an AA Highly Recommended Edwardian guesthouse / bed and breakfast, is a fine example of the Edwardian style of domestic architecture in South Africa. Situated in the shady tree-lined streets of Waterkloof, just over the road from the historic Pretoria Country Club Golf Course, we are surrounded by major diplomatic residences. The British, English, French, American, German, Dutch, Danish, Italian and Spanish - to name but a few - are either in the same street or not more than a few blocks away.

Edward House caters for the business person and traveller and is conveniently located to major shopping centres, universities, hospitals and - because of easy access to highways - major tourist attractions such as Cradle of Mankind (Maropeng), Melrose House, Voortrekker Monument, Apartheid Museum, Constitutional Court, Gold Reef City and the De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary.

Edward House is a favourite destination for travellers on the world famous Blue Train as well as the romantic steam train, Rovos Rail. In keeping with this colonial African experience, Edward House is traditionally designed for a hot climate.

ACCOMMODATION

Three bedrooms upstairs have french doors leading onto a wide, red polished wrap-around veranda/stoep, which has beautiful views over the garden and fairways of the Pretoria Country Club Golf Course. Besides adding another dimension of living space to our rooms we find that guests make extensive use of these verandas, particularly on hot summer evenings, when sitting outside becomes such a pleasure.

Edward House celebrates the massive contribution made by prominent personalities of the Edwardian era to the development of South Africa as it is today. Yet this graceful house offers its guests all modern amenities.

All bedrooms are
• air-conditioned with individual controls
• have Wifi Internet connection
• Laptop size safes
• Television (Mnet plus a separate satellite channel)
• Bar fridges
• Tea and coffee making facilities
• Desks & seating areas
• Laundry services are available on request.

Our Rooms

Rooms are decorated to please the eye and reflect the personalities of the characters they celebrate:

The Cecil John Rhodes Room
The Cecil John Rhodes Room features a queen size mahogany sleigh bed. It is decorated traditionally in cream, lace and tapestry pillows and accented with colonial touches. Its en-suite bathroom contains a free standing Edwardian Roll Top bath as well as a vanity slab, frameless glass shower etc. French doors open out onto a private section of the wraparound veranda.

The Olive Schreiner Room
The Olive Schreiner Room is a single room, quietly decorated in the faded colours of a bygone era. It contains a double four-poster bed, piled with white lace cushions and a floral chaise-lounge. The bathroom also contains a free standing Edwardian Roll Top bath, a shower etc.

The Mahatma Ghandi Room
The Mahatma Ghandi Room also opens out onto a private section of the wraparound veranda and is decorated in the spicy colours of the East. It has a full bathroom (glass shower and bath) and a view through its French doors into the tree tops.

The Jan Smuts Room
The Jan Smuts Room celebrates the botanical interests of this great statesman. It has a full bathroom with frameless glass shower and is decorated in white with simple floral cotton accents. French doors open out onto a private balcony that overlooks the garden and a graceful free-standing fountain.

Facilities

We like to add the little touches that welcome our guests to Edward House and what could be more welcoming than providing amenities like soaps, shampoos, body washes, vanity kits and shower caps that they may have forgotten to pack, as well as a range of relaxing bath salts and foams presented in our beautiful glass jars?

Public areas

Downstairs the dining and reading rooms also access onto a wrap-around veranda. Polished wooden floors, cornices and brass chandeliers form a background to a decor that makes use of tapestries, silks, laces, cottons, brocades and some interesting Edwardian objects belonging to the family. A light hand ensures that the effect is refined and understated.

Breakfast & Dining

The guesthouse and swimming pool are set in a treed garden filled with roses, azaleas, camelias and the more exotic shade-loving ferns and delicious monsters. Many guests make use of the wide covered verandas to breakfast in the garden. We offer a varied breakfast menu catering for individuals who might be health conscious, are hearty eaters or have a sweet tooth. Other light meals are available on request.

At Edward House we offer you a private world, giving you the space and means to relax in your own special way.
