Sandton Destinations & Attractions

There is no place in the world like Sandton, and it is not hard to see why. This is a prosperous part of Johannesburg. In fact, at about 156 square kilometres, Sandton is proud to be one of the wealthiest and most luxurious areas of the African continent. This does not only make it an exciting place to explore, but also an important hub for commerce and media.

Although Sandton was once a town in its own rights, it is now part of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Interestingly, it was in this area that many indigenous African groups once lived, before the area was colonised by European settlers. Therefore, parts of Sandton have particularly interesting historical contexts. Then, during the mid-20th century, the region was popular amongst those with small-holdings, many of whom owned horses, which gave Sandton the air of nobility and wealth that is still exudes.

Today, it is the address of an enormous number of corporate entities, establishing itself as a veritable commercial capital. One of Africa’s largest conventions centres, Sandton Convention Centre, enjoys prime positioning within the heart of this sector and hosts many significant local and international events.

Sandton City is the mall that lures millions, and delights those with a passion for shopping. There are over 140 000 square metres in which to browse the shops and boutiques, enjoy leisurely lunches and flat whites, or indulge in some fun-filled family entertainment. Sandton City is one of the largest malls in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also just around the corner from Nelson Mandela Square, which is landmarked by a massive bronze statue of Madiba himself. However, this square is about more than the impressive sculpture. It is a piazza with a particularly European look and feel to it. The square is home to some of the best restaurants in the region as well as a host of charming sidewalk cafés and about 90 shops and boutiques.

Because the township of Alexandra is situated within close proximity to the heart of Sandton, the cultural element of this Johannesburg region is undeniable.
