Northern Gauteng Destinations & Attractions

Gauteng is a province of diversity and excitement, where tourism and commerce converge to celebrate all that is African. Northern Gauteng is not an official region, but is informally made up of Tshwane and Metsweding, which includes Pretoria.

Apart from Pretoria, the area of Northern Gauteng is rather rural, giving it a charming feel that is quite irresistible to many of its visitors. For this reason, Northern Gauteng is a popular base for travellers that want to explore the bustling metropolis of Johannesburg and surrounds while soaking up all of its small-town appeal.

Pretoria is a major town in Northern Gauteng. Not only is it South Africa’s administrative capital, but it also boasts plenty of history. It is also called Tshwane and Jacaranda City for its abundance of purple-bloomed jacaranda trees, which are simply spectacular when flowering. Pretoria is relatively near to the heart of Johannesburg and its international airport, OR Tambo. It is well connected via a series of highways. However, Pretoria also has plenty of attractions of its own. Some of the best known highlights include Freedom Park, the Union Buildings, the Voortrekker Monument, and the Pretoria Art Museum. It is home to a number of natural areas, such as the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, National Botanical Gardens, National Zoological Gardens and the Wonderboom Nature Reserve. Of course, it is not only the ideal destination for nature-lovers. Shoppers have an enormous variety of top-class malls in Pretoria. Some of these include Brooklyn Mall, Centurion Mall and Menlyn Park.

The small area of Irene is host to the Irene Village Market on the second and last Saturday of every month. Here, more than 300 stalls can be found, each with a unique offering; ranging from food, arts and crafts to clothing, curios, flowers and antiques. There is entertainment for children, giving their parents the chance to relax, knowing how much fun their little ones are having. The market is open between 09h00 and 14h00.
