Destinations & Attractions in Midrand, in Johannesburg

Midrand Destinations & Attractions

Midrand is one of Johannesburg’s major tourist hubs as well as an important epicentre of industry and development, nestled exactly halfway between Witwatersrand and Pretoria. Its central location and access to a number of key highways has meant huge economic success for the Midrand, which also boasts plenty of entertainment for its visitors.

Some of the better known suburbs of Midrand include Glen Austin, Glenferness, Kyalami, and Gallagher Estate.

Kyalami has earned its acclaim in the sporting arena, being home to the internationally-renowned Kyalami Race Track and its associated Country Club. This is a grand prix track that has hosted a number of exciting national and international races. The track was established in the 1960’s. For the past few years, it has become an all-purpose motorsport venue that promises fun and excitement for the whole family. It is 4.2 kilometres long and has no fewer than 11 corners. Around the track are other exciting attractions and activities (including a carting course and the nearby Kyalami Golf Course).

For the culturally inclined, the Nizamiye Mosque of Midrand is both fascinating and breathtakingly beautiful. This is a Turkish mosque that reflects the classic design and architectural style of this intriguing country. Costing R210 million to build, it remains the largest mosque in the country.

Nature-lovers visiting Midrand are encouraged to see the spectacular Glen Austin Bird Sanctuary. This home to some of the most beautiful birds imaginable was established to provide a haven where they could receive lodging and care, as well as an education centre, at which visitors could witness the splendour of nature and learn about the unique characteristics and requirements for the avian residents of our own habitat. Some of the birds that can be found here include the crimson-breasted shrike, tit babbler, black cuckoo shrike, bru bru shrike, white stork, black-headed heron, and helmeted guinea fowl.
