Magaliesberg Destinations & Attractions

The Magaliesberg region presents all of the beauty and mystic wonder of our country within close proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. This makes it the ideal destination for its convenience, but also for its unforgettable splendour.

The entire region comprises a number of smaller towns and areas. These include Magaliesburg (a town that is spelt differently to the region), Renosterspruit, Hekpoort and Kromdraai.

The Magaliesberg Mountain Range, which spans 120 kilometres in its length, is clearly the main attraction of this magnificent area. These mountains are the oldest known peaks in the world, and are of particular importance in the geological and archaeological spheres. The mountains of Magaliesberg are home to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the location in which a number of very important fossils have been discovered. In fact, these fossils are believed to be the remains of the very first Homo sapiens, the human beings we know today. The Sterkfontein Caves are a very special attraction, and continue to fascinate researchers. It is these sites that suggest that humans occupied this area up to two million years ago. This attraction will delight young and old alike as they explore its expanses.

The natural wonder of the area is created by deep gorges, towering cliff faces, powerful waterfalls and stretches of gorgeous landscape. This makes the entire area ideal for hiking, walking, cycling, running, abseiling and mountain climbing. Therefore, Magaliesberg is a prime spot amongst adventure travellers that are looking to push their limits within the glory of the South African outdoors. The animals that have made this their natural habitat of choice are beautiful to watch and provide visitors with some fabulous viewing. GoVertical caters to those that want to get their hearts racing. In addition to abseiling and rock climbing, they also offer river rafting, kloofing and hiking excursions.

Horse riding trails are a great way to immerse yourself in the surrounding loveliness, as you are able to enjoy a greater area of the surrounds without becoming exhausted, but at a comfortable pace. Take along some tasty goodies for a picnic along the way. Saddle Creek Ranch is one of the service providers offering these exciting trails.

Taking a hot air balloon over the Magaliesberg region promises to be a unique experience that you will treasure for a lifetime. The 360-degree views are spectacular; not too high to miss the details, while offering enough height to provide vistas that stretch on for what seems like an eternity. Companies like Flying Pictures include a champagne breakfast or something equally special in their ballooning packages.
